Anxiety may arise from a range of factors including:
Nutrition: Avoiding alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, sugar and refined carbohydrates appears to play a key role in reducing anxiety.
Nutritional deficiency of the B group vitamins, and the minerals magnesium and calcium
Environmental: heavy metals (lead, mercury, cadmium and aluminium), pesticides and herbicides have an affinity to the nervous system
Social pressures: factors such as job pressures, family pressures and the stress of modern day living will all contribute to anxiety
Hypoglycaemia: the brain requires a constant supply of blood sugar. A drop in blood glucose levels results in the release of hormones which increase blood sugar levels. Depending on the individual’s symptoms, hypoglycaemia can include anxiety, irritability, fatigue and headaches.
Allergies: from both food and environmental factors have been linked to increased anxiety, depression and a general feeling of fatigue.
Hormonal factors: are known to influence mood. Anxiety is a common symptom of premenstrual syndrome. Anxiety, irritability and emotional instability due to PMS are strongly associated with excess oestrogen and decreased progesterone during the premenstrual phase.

Cholesterol Cholesterol management
Increased levels of cholesterol are a major risk factor for heart disease. This is the decade to make sure that cholesterol is well managed, in order to help prevent serious disease. Total blood cholesterol levels above 5.5 mmol/L are an indication of an increased risk of developing coronary heart disease. Levels above 6.5 mmol/L are considered to indicate extremely high risk. Around 50% of both men and women over the age of 25 have blood cholesterol levels above 5.5 mmol/L. This is due to a number of factors including diet, lifestyle and genes.
Dietary measures are obviously important, with the reduction of animal products such as fatty meats and full-fat dairy foods, and the addition of fibre-rich foods. Additionally, the use of natural products for cholesterol management, or orthodox medical drugs, may be necessary.
Fortunately, most factors that increase the risk of suffering from heart disease, such as smoking, overweight, increased cholesterol and lack of physical exercise, can be reduced or managed
Cholesterol is a fat-related substance necessary for good health. It is a normal component of most body tissues, especially those of the brain, nervous system, liver and blood and is needed to form the sex and adrenal hormones, vitamin D and bile (a digestive secretion required for fat digestion). A high level of blood cholesterol, however, increases the likelihood of developing health problems such as heart disease.
Cholesterol levels are measured by a simple blood test. Your healthcare professional can organise this for you, along with other measurements of your cardiovascular health, such as blood pressure testing.
There are five types of cholesterol, but it is the high density and low density cholesterol (HDL and LDL) that we need to look at more closely.
HDL has the ability to clear built-up cholesterol from the arteries and help in its removal from the body – sometimes people refer to it as the “good” cholesterol.
LDL is linked to heart disease and is involved in the fatty build-up on artery walls – known as atherosclerosis, or “hardening of the arteries”. This form of cholesterol is sometimes referred to as “bad” cholesterol.
Atherosclerotic plaque on the inside lining of the arteries, impedes circulation and may lead to heart attack and stroke. Cholesterol may also collect in the gall bladder to form gallstones.
Cholesterol levels in the blood depend on both dietary factors and the amount of cholesterol manufactured by the body.
Approximately 75% of cholesterol is produced in the body and 25% is introduced via the diet.
As we age, cholesterol levels generally rise as the body increases production.
People who use certain muscles all the time, such as athletes, gardeners and professional drivers, often suffer from cramps in one or more muscles.
A sharp, sudden, painful spasm (or tightening) of a muscle, especially in the legs
The muscle feels hard to the touch
Twitching of the muscle
Persistent cramping pains in lower abdominal muscles
Exercise-induced (heat) cramps
Muscles contract or lengthen in response to desire to move. Cramps occur when a muscle contracts with great intensity and stays contracted, refusing to stretch out again.
The occasional muscle cramp is not cause for concern, but if they occur frequently there may be an underlying mineral or hormonal imbalance. This is particularly the case with older people, who may experience muscle cramps when taking certain drugs that deplete the minerals potassium and magnesium from the body.
In younger people, cramps are more commonly due to loss of mineral salts and dehydration brought on by exercising (particularly in high temperatures) – these are commonly referred to as heat cramps. Poor circulation can also result in cramps, particularly in the calf muscle.

Headaches and Migraines
There are many different types of headache – these are some of the symptoms associated with some common types:
Tension headache – a dull, steady pain that feels like a band tightening around the back of the head and neck
Migraine headache – severe throbbing pain usually located on one side of the head, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, tingling and numbness of the limbs
Sinus headache – steady pain accompanied by congestion in the area behind the face, worse for bending forward
Tension headaches are triggered by stress or physical irritants such as persistent noise, eyestrain, poor posture, too much caffeine, or the grinding or clenching of teeth.
Migraines involve excessive constriction and dilation of blood vessels in the brain. They can be triggered by any number of things including food allergy, stress, premenstrual syndrome, flashing lights or bright glare, too little or too much exercise or sleep, even changes in barometric pressure (humidity).
Sinus headaches typically result from hay fever and other seasonal allergies, or from a cold or the flu, and are caused by pressure and inflammation in the sinus cavity.
Other causes of headache include:
Low blood sugar
Blow to the head

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a movement disorder that causes uncomfortable sensations in the legs. The symptoms are accompanied by an irresistible urge to move the legs.
People use a variety of words to express the discomfort of RLS such as:
Pins and needles
These sensations are typically worse during periods of rest, especially just before sleeping at night,
Low iron levels in the blood have been correlated with the syndrome; an iron supplement may help to reduce the symptoms.
The mineral magnesium taken at the onset of the symptoms, often solves the problem, particularly if RLS is associated with leg cramps. Best taken just before bed.
In cases of restless legs syndrome, there appears to be a higher need for folic acid – your healthcare professional will recommend an appropriate dose for you (higher doses may require a prescription).
